Flat Shop (Flame/Neon) Coordinator

Join us in the Flat Shop, a versatile studio dedicated to flameworking and neon courses, which also doubles as classroom space for hot shop courses. The studio buzzes with creativity from 10 AM to 1 AM, with Instructors and TAs monitoring class activities during extended hours. As the Flat Shop Coordinator, you’ll support the studio from 10 AM to 9 PM, taking breaks for meals, artist talks, and events.

Recommended Experience:

  • Proficient in programming with GB-4 and Sentry Xpress 4.0 control systems
  • Extensive knowledge of techniques, materials, and equipment related to flameworking or neon processing, depending on active classes
  • Experience with scientific glass lathes is preferred

General Outline of Tasks:

  • Oversee the technical operation of the Flat Shop
  • Collaborate with the Studios Manager and Seasonal Technician to manage transitions between neon and flameworking sessions
  • Prepare necessary materials, tools, and equipment based on class needs
  • Provide safety orientations on the proper use of equipment and materials to all program participants
  • Assist instructors and TAs in guiding campus participants with their projects
  • Monitor the safe use of the Flat Shop and its equipment
  • Manage gas and oxygen supplies, coordinating with the Studios Manager and Seasonal Technician for orders
  • Inventory all tool kits and safety glasses each session
  • Report any equipment issues to the Studios Manager and Seasonal Technician, assisting with troubleshooting and repairs
  • Facilitate communication among instructors and participants using the shop
  • Organize daily clean-ups and end-of-session tidying
  • Attend scheduled weekly staff meetings and program meetings
  • Complete all assigned projects by the end of the session

Compensation:

  • Work up to 40 hours per week at a rate of $22 per hour
  • Room and board provided while on campus
