Hauberg Residents Collaborate with "Carried on Both Sides"

We’re very excited to support our 2016 Hauberg Fellows, Caroline Woolard, Helen Lee and Alexander Rosenberg  who have joined in the collaboration of Carried on Both Sides, an immersive installation that uncovers the ancient history of the @ symbol. As Woolard explains, “the project questions how present logics of freedom and exchange carry with them resonances of past imperial lives”. Carried on Both Sides features carved wooden columns, hand blown glass amphorae, glass murrine, a single-channel video, and soft sculptures made of kevlar.

Carried on Both Sides will be the subject of an Artists’ Gallery Talk at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for those in the New York Area. For those outside of NYC, the PBS series, Art 21 has just released a short film about the project available streaming online here.

Carried on Both Sides: Encounter One will be presented at LMAKgallery from January 19 - February 25, 2018; Carried on Both Sides: Encounter Two will be presented at the Lesley Heller Workspace from April 18 - May 20, 2018; Carried on Both Sides: Encounter Three will be presented at the Knockdown Center in the summer of 2018.

This project is the result of two years of collaborative work that was supported by residencies at Pilchuck and Urban Glass.

“The Hauberg Fellowship allowed us to explore glass as the material through which all digital communication occurs. Without the Fellowship, our project -- one that will be included in PBS / Art21 -- simply would not have happened. Pilchuck brings technical agility to conceptual rigor, enabling interdisciplinary collaborations like ours to flourish. I cannot measure the impact of encounters with nuance, beauty, and the unknown -- I can only say, I am forever transformed,” says Woolard about the Pilchuck Hauberg Fellowship.
